With Operational Leaders the system just works. Heck, it works remarkably well. It is an efficient, organized machine. Why? That is what Operational Managers do. They drive the business to perform by behaving as a cohesive organized structure.
Established businesses develop excellent Operational Leaders. They run the business surprisingly well, and are very good at their jobs. But what happens when they face a significant change? Consider how the rapid change in the Canadian dollar has impacted manufacturers and exporters? This coupled with the rising threat of Chinese manufacturing could make any executives head spin.
As much as these businesses run well, they are poorly equipped for significant change. The leadership is focused on themselves. They focus on production, and EBITA and staffing. They don’t have time to focus on strategy or the big picture. Nor are they equipped to do so.
Rising up is a major hurdle for an operational management team. It requires a totally different skill set, as well as a different mindset.
